So … what was Ianto going to say before Jack interrupted him?? What sort of manners was he about to diss? Something kinky? Something physical? Something like eating crisps in bed and getting crumbs all over the place?
I’ve always wondered if Ianto in this episode is a bit more sassy because he’s acting out, as opposed to the more accepted interpretation that he is glad to see Jack and things have sort of gone back to normal between them. I even started a story where Jack (surprisingly enough) picked up on the increase in snark and realized Ianto was still upset with him. Cue the big confrontation on Jack leaving that we didn’t get on screen. Because there had to have been something. Even Ianto Jones isn’t enough of a saint to take him back without saying a word.
But it never went anywhere. Probably because Ianto turned into an aquatic alien and swam away and I’m still trying to figure out what part of my brain that came from, lol.
So - Jack’s manners???
I feel like your crisps situation is most likely. I don’t think Jack would put Ianto into a kinky situation that Ianto would see any reason to complain about later. (Unless Ianto is the Dom and this is subtle way of chiding Jack for being a very naughty boy, but I doubt he’d do that in front of the rest of the team.) I can definitely see Ianto getting annoyed by the slightest little mess. Or snoring. Jack’s probably a blanket-hog who snores.
What gets me about this scene is—My desire for them all to be having secret threesomes aside—Where is Gwen hearing about Jack’s manners in bed, if not from Ianto? Either Gwen’s out hunting down Jack’s one-night-stands for the dirty details, she and John had a long talk that wasn’t on screen, or Ianto is gossiping to her about what Jack’s like in bed. :D
Oh, I *love* your Dom idea! Write it! But the crumbs and blanket hogging seem more likely.
As for how Gwen knew…yet another throwaway line you have to wonder what the hell the writers were thinking when they tossed it in. And what the actors thought when they read it. I suppose if you wanted to go a bit dark, a fic springing from that line could be about Gwen knowing for a fact that Jack has bad manners in bed. Cue the team finding out she slept with him as well as Owen. Ugliness ensues, Janto ends, thousands of fangirls cry into their laptop keyboard.
But seeing as I’m not a fan of that pairing, that’s all I’ll say on that! ;)
I’ve read several fics where yes, Ianto gossiped with Gwen about it. Usually it was over TYTNW, and he was either drunk or upset or actually growing closer to Gwen. So in my head, Ianto did indeed let something slip that Gwen then lets slip. Or maybe he said something to Tosh, who told Gwen. Maybe in an attempt to get Gwen to back off putting Jack on a her golden pedestal: “Gwen! Ianto told me blah blah blah about Jack. So would you kindly stop hero-worshipping him when he’s just as normal as any other man other there?” Oh, I could write that!
The irony being that Gwen spends most episodes both hero-worshipping and then doubting/questioning/challenging/threatening Jack. Which is both complex and annoying.
Ha, I have no trouble writing Jack as submissive, but I can’t write Ianto as a Dom to save my life. I think it’s totally plausible, I just can’t ever seem to make it work in my own writing.
Well, that opens up a whole discussion on whether or not Jack and Ianto were even monogamous. Jack sleeping with Gwen, even if it weren’t a threesome, wouldn’t necessarily have to be the end of Jack/Ianto.
I wouldn’t say that Gwen hero-worshipped Jack. I think she romanticized his flaws (and Owen’s) in season one, but I think that she was always aware that they had flaws, and she stopped romanticizing those flaws by the time season two started. Owen was right when he said that Gwen was bored with Rhys, but when Rhys died and Gwen thought she’d lost his boring dependability, she realized how much she actually valued it. And then Jack went and really drove it home to her that he would never be as dependable as Rhys is by running off at the first hint of “the right kind of Doctor” and leaving her to do his job for god knows how many months. I think when it actually came time for her to make a choice between Jack and Rhys in season two, she did so knowing that she’d have obstacles to overcome in her relationship with either of them, and she chose Rhys because him having a normal job and a lifestyle that was incompatible with hers wasn’t nearly as much of an obstacle as Jack being utterly undependable.
Toshiko madly-in-love-with-Owen-Harper Sato is the last woman in the world who gets to lecture another girl about ignoring a man’s flaws. xD Besides that, The Ianto/Jack/Gwen love-triangle was never particularly dramatic, but if there had been drama, I think Tosh would want about a rugby field of distance between herself and the drama at all times. Especially given that it involves her boss, I can’t see her having anything to say to any of the three parties involved about it. And Owen wouldn’t care because he’s Owen. The best bet would probably be Martha, but Ianto and Martha hadn’t met at this point and Martha might be so tired of relationship drama that she’d probably just recommend Ianto dump Jack it it was hurting him this badly.
Given that Jack was doing the majority of the pursuing for Jack/Gwen in season two, Ianto might have better luck with getting Rhys to open up about Gwen’s most unattractive moments. But that all seems a little childish for him.
I really just want Ianto and Gwen gossiping about Jack and picking on him while they’re totally sober, just because they know they both love Jack and they’re the only two who’ll understand that they’re not really complaining, they just need to get some things off their chest. Sort of like they both did with Martha, but in a slightly less flattering way because they didn’t know how close Martha actually was to Jack and how far they could really go, but with each other they know that they both love Jack, they just need to vent about him sometimes. Besides, Tosh and Owen just don’t care, while the Gwen and Ianto could both sit and talk about Jack for ages without either of them getting bored.
Though, I also kind of want to revisit the possibility of John sharing some stories with Gwen. It strikes me as entirely in-character for John and Gwen to be walking around the docks in KKBB (before the scene we saw), and for John to do or say something that makes Gwen respond with “It’s no wonder Jack broke up with you,” and then John gets totally offended and insists that he broke up with Jack (which is a lie, but hey, Jack’s first rule!) and then proceeds to give Gwen a detailed 50 point list of reasons why Jack is the worst boyfriend ever and John never wants to see him again… and then of course he locks Gwen in the shipping container and runs off to beg Jack to get back together with him, because he is John Hart and he does whatever he impulsively wants to do in that second.
